We Walked Out

About an hour into my course on Feminist Spaces Online a student informed us that an absent class member had just texted her suggesting that we should leave class and join her at the USC Walkout for a Safer Campus. This we did, and I couldn’t have scripted a better “teachable moment” for our class. ... read more »

The comments in the title say it all. I agree with AloBrineta. Well put for a 21-year old from Croatia not even speaking her first language! ... read more »

Words of Online Feminists Of Color

“If I write race, I write it slant. I write it scat. I write it slipshod. I write it in the same manner I live it. Letting my work embody contradiction and delight. I love rumors about black men. I love the attention on the street in daylight.” Reginald Dwayne Betts ... read more »

Online Feminism Class Mid-term Reflections

My USC undergrads are great sports, engaging in innovative primary research and production for their course work for Online Feminist Spaces. They have to choose an online space for the semester and do a variety of assignments within it. To my surprise, a majority of the them chose generic, corporate, often hostile or misogynistic spaces for their assigned feminist practices, believing I think, that the easiest intervention for would-be scholar/activists would be to name and fight sexism where it was most obvious and obnoxious. ... read more »

Anxiety Is a State of Media/Mind: On SCMS and Feminist Blogging

I’ve returned from SCMS and Louisiana (having seen two alligators in the wild on a hike and eaten crawfish and shrimp in innumerable yummy formats) and would like to briefly mention a few of my more memorable media encounters: like the alligator, anxiety-defined all. ... read more »

Since last summer, Toby has recorded meandering, lively and detailed conversations with scholars, artists, and activists and he releases them in unedited real time on his podcast to 1000 or so subscribers, all probably three men and their dog in Sweden, according to Toby. ... read more »

THE NOWHERES & EVERYWHERE OF ONLINE FEMINISM

I am on sabbatical during the Spring of 2011. During this period of relative freedom, I plan to promote, network, and engage with my YouTube video-book (to be released February 7) and to begin thinking about, researching, and getting my hands dirty within my new project regarding online feminism. ... read more »

Bechdel’s Bechdel (1997)

I have been following Alex Vesy’s “Bechdel Test Canon” at Feminist Music Geek. The Bechdel Test  seems to be going as viral as any lesbian thing ever could. I recently heard about it on NPR. ... read more »

On Rallies Real and Fake

I’ve been mulling over both my take and my stake in regards to the Rally to Restore Sanity and the recent and related Tea Party March on Washington, not to mention yesterday’s Republican and Tea Party (voting) rallies that led to their re-taking of the House. In all cases, we witness the same ironic free fall I’ve discussed earlier: perfectly real rallies organized around glaring glorious fakes that may or may not be understood as such. ... read more »
