Writing Values

If you were required to make a video for a class that would get the most hits in a small amount of time, what qualities would you strive for? “S**t Girls Say at Superbowl” won just such a contest with a paltry 1400+ hits (when my students did this four years ago they got to 100,000 because, we can agree, YouTube was smaller then and easier to game). This year’s winner was timely, funny-enough, pretty well done, meta to YouTube, and socially-networked:... read more »

Comments as Writing

My course, Learning from YouTube, advertises that all class assignments take the shape of YouTube videos or comments, hence pushing and challenging both the constraints of web 2.0′s platforms for higher learning, while at the same time, asking higher learning to take better account of the ways, places, and forms where learning occurs in 2012.... read more »

Voice as Structure

Yesterday afternoon, I had the decided pleasure of partaking in a conversation with Natalie Bookchin, the amazing new media artist who is my friend and even sometimes collaborator. We spoke together with the Critical Digital Humanities group at UC Riverside about space, quotation, and community in relation to our critical media practices.... read more »

Stories of Digital Storytelling

My graduate Cultural Studies class, Visual Research Methods, has my students performing scholarship about visual culture, using visual methods (alongside or supplanting traditional scholarly writing about the visual), and visual formats. The final section of the course is about digital storytelling, and the assignment is to consider this new phenomenon within and through the sphere itself. The course yielded some first rate scholarship, listed here, on the digital storytelling of:... read more »

Is Occupy LA a Feminist Space?

Yes … ish?

Here, my students and I, from Feminist Online Spaces, create a real-space circle at Occupy LA, after some initial trepidation, but with nothing resulting other than friendly/bemused/flirty/crazy conversation from fellow Occupiers.... read more »

Scholar/Performers and Academic “Talks”

My Fall Road Show has been a fruitful opportunity to play out, in person, many of the issues of concern for my Online Feminist Spaces project: namely my interest in performing and interrogating in form the unique and mutually-influencing strengths of on/off line community and interaction. For instance, I have been quite interested in the intentional deployment of feeling in an (academic) room as one critical part of this live, human (or feminist) interaction that is almost impossible to replicate online.... read more »

Digital Storytelling: Where the Experts

I teach a course, Visual Research Methods, for Cultural Studies at the Claremont Graduate University where I push graduate students who have made a career of paper-writing to express their intellectual work about visual culture, visually. Even as the course provocatively pushes them as individuals out of their comfort zones of expression and audience, it also begs larger questions about field formation, training, authority, the use, ethics and scale of academic work, and its normative vernaculars, media, and modalities.... read more »
