Hans Staats is a lecturer at the Austin Waldorf School. He earned his PhD in comparative literature at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. His dissertation focuses on the cultural function of the figure of the child in horror film and media and the cinematic preoccupation with monstrosity. His writing has appeared in a variety of journals and collections, including CineAction, Offscreen, the Irish Journal of Gothic and Horror Studies, Journal of the Fantastic in the Arts, War Gothic in Literature and Culture (Routledge, 2015), What’s Eating You?: Food and Horror on Screen (Bloomsbury, 2017), Cruel Children in Popular Texts and Cultures (Palgrave, 2018) and Elder Horror: Essays on Cinematic Hermits, Harbingers, and Hags (McFarland, forthcoming). He is currently working on a book manuscript, based on his dissertation, and a collection of essays on the relationship between the horror film and the concept of romantic love.
