On Rallies Real and Fake

I’ve been mulling over both my take and my stake in regards to the Rally to Restore Sanity and the recent and related Tea Party March on Washington, not to mention yesterday’s Republican and Tea Party (voting) rallies that led to their re-taking of the House. In all cases, we witness the same ironic free fall I’ve discussed earlier: perfectly real rallies organized around glaring glorious fakes that may or may not be understood as such. ... read more »

Me ‘n MIT: Building Better Contracts for On-Line Publishing

For anyone out there interested in digital academic publishing, I am quite pleased to report that the slow and complex negotiations to create a useful and meaningful contract with MIT Press for my “video-book” are at last complete. And I have the paper to prove it! I have hoped that sharing these fruitful if hard conversations with the innovative editors at MIT who have been open to re-thinking what counts as a book, and how we might all gain from new forms of writing and its publishing, especially about digital content, would be useful for others who are also wrangling their way on this awkward, and usually unsupported trek, and I thank the editors at MIT for agreeing to let me make this public. ... read more »

SexMoneyMedia: Feminist Aftershocks

I had the honor to give a keynote address at this international symposium, sponsored by Women in View, an association of  Canadian media professionals. An astoundingly diverse and powerful group of women–with high-ranking representatives from industry, finance, unions, the national government, technology, academia, the arts, and non-profits–joined for two days, with the primary goal of making sense of (and providing action items towards changing) the shockingly regressive rates of women’s participation in, and representation through, media. ... read more »

Sneaking in Some Political Modernism

“At this point it is necessary to ask again why the discourse of political modernism, so clearly part of the recent history of film theory, is considered as reaching an impasse. ... read more »

Catfish: Fears of Facebook’s Creepy Country

While Catfish presents as a convincingly real fake-documentary (currently awaiting its BIG reveal), I’d suggest that it is even more interesting to think about this already interesting work as a horror film. ... read more »

“The Facebook Documentary”: On Well-timed, Well-placed, ...

In my previous post on The Social Network, I suggested that Facebook’s (i.e. Mark Zuckerberg and Co.’s) pricey (minimum cost, $100-million dollars… to needy Jersey schools that is) and highly orchestrated public relations blitz now playing across the mediascape at exactly the moment of a slanderous mainstream narrative film’s opening, was a “documentary.” I’d like to revisit that now. ... read more »

Social Network: nah, I’ll watch “The Facebook Documentary” live, on-line

I’ve written extensively here about the mis-steps of the usually celebrated terrain of convergence: the too easy, sloppy, ill-conceived contemporary media moves between documentary, fiction, and hybrid back again. ... read more »
